Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Did Abner Doubleday invent baseball? Who was the first African American to playin the major leagues? Who, “Hit ‘em where they ain’t? Why was Shoeless Joe Jackson called Shoeless Joe? And, why did the Chicago White Sox become the Chicago Black Sox? All these and many more questions, factoids and generally interesting topics will be discussed in “Take me out to the Ball Game”. This class will cover the evolution of base ball (two words) from the English game of rounders to baseball as we know it today. This first session of a series of four will take us from the beginnings in the 1840s to 1920 when baseball almost ended.
